Exciting New Structure for 3rd–6th Grade Rec Basketball
We are thrilled to share some updates to our recreational basketball program for 3rd–6th graders…
Why the Change?
No More Traditional “Teams”
- Instead of being locked into one team for the season, kids will join larger skill-based cohorts (20–22 players).
- Cohorts will be split by gender & mixed by grade within each division (i.e. 3rd & 4th grade division; 5th & 6th grade division)
- Multiple coaches will work with each group, focusing on different skills like ball handling, defense, shooting, and passing.
More Practices, More Skills
- Kids will practice together during the week and on Saturdays.
- Coaches will rotate players through stations, making sure everyone improves in all areas of the game.
- Optional additional practices may be offered for kids who want extra time in the gym.
Games Look Different
- When it’s time to scrimmage, rosters will be mixed and balanced each week.
- Kids will get to play with and against different teammates, keeping games fresh and competitive.
Season Schedule
- Runs November 10th–February 14th.
- Developmental Clinics during the week and Saturdays.
- Games begin at local middle schools in late December.
Community Involvement
- Older players (7th grade through high school) will help run practices and referee games, gaining volunteer hours and leadership experience.
At these ages, kids are still learning the game and developing their skills. Research and successful youth programs in Europe show that when young players focus on skill development first—rather than just playing games on set teams—they become more confident, versatile players. European clubs emphasize training in groups, rotating through different coaches, and developing all-around basketball skills before specializing. We want to bring that same proven approach here.
